Surely you would need to study about the field and complete five-year graduation course to be one, but presence of above mentioned qualities can be a big asset for this profession. As these are some of important qualities of an architect.

 

Brief description of the profession: –

With use of both creative and logical mind, the job of an architect includes designing new building as well as suggesting changes of old and existing buildings.  They have to make sure the safety of the building in the presented design, visually pleasing, economically feasible and functional. There can be a wide variety in types of buildings ranging from restaurants, offices, apartments, movie theatre, shopping malls, hospitals and much more.

Skills required for the field:

  • Keen observation power and visual imagination skills: You need to be very observant about every small aspect of the design to make it perfect.
  • Detailed and perfect working: Every small detail needs to be authentic as strength of the building.
  • Good communication skills: You need to sell your designs and win client’s agreement over your designs.
  • Creative and realistic: Along with creativity making your designs aesthetically presentable, they need to be realistic and adaptable by engineers.
  • Ability to fulfil and understand client’s demand: It’s important to present idea as per client’s need and demand in order to make the project successful.
  • Respect for investor’s demand: You need to keep designs economically feasible in accordance to budget of the investor.
  • Tech-friendly: Architects usually use CAD software to make their designs, so one needs to be comfortable using it.
  • Hard-work and coping with engineers: It’s important to put effort in order to keep up with engineers on filed for a successful project.

 

Job scope:

Architecture is growing field and has raising demand. Architects can work with construction companies as a designer, meeting requirements of the client aesthetically and financially along with building security.

Freelancing is also an option in this profession, where one can take up different projects from various companies and gets paid accordingly.

Other than this there is huge scope in government sector in architecture such as National Building organisation, Town and country planning organisation, National institute of Urban Affairs, Railway department, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, National Building Construction Corporation Ltd., Public Work Department, Ministry of Defence etc.

Other than these Architecture Firms, Consultants, Housing Boards and Other local bodies also hire Architects.

How well does the job pay?

As a fresher one can beg up to 20K to 30K per month, and with experience of about 2 years one can expect raise in salary. A professional with experience of 6 years can earn up to 70K easily. Other than this income can vary depending upon number and level of projects.

 

Job environment (Pros and Cons):

Typically job of an architect is very detail oriented, and provides great sense of fulfilment as they make world beautiful while ensuring the environment safety. It involves working and coping with engineers and visiting field for checking. Salaries are average and increase with experience depending upon projects and levels of projects. Though status of economy can affect the income at times.

There are different sub-divisions and names for various job types under this filed-

  • Architect: Someone who typically looks after planning, designing and oversight of the construction building, and is trained in an architecture school. They are licenced to work independently, in a construction company or real-estate firm.
  • Architecture Engineer: Dual qualification is needed for this post, of an architect and a civil engineer. They have responsibilities of both architect and engineer, and have very high demand in the market.
  • Architecture Designer: These are people who are not registered like an architect but design various building including home, office buildings etc. Some additional duties include designing of malls and small buildings, concerned with aesthetical presence.
  • Interior Designing: Trained professionals can work with interior designing firms offering designing jobs in housing interiors, bathrooms, offices, furniture etc.

 

How do I get there?

  1. Complete 10+2 in any stream (Math compulsory) (Science preferred).
  2. Pursue B.Arch for 5 years.
  3. Pursue MURP for 2 years. (Optional)

* It’s mandatory to clear class 12 examination with aggregate of 50% marks.

*IITs, NITs and SPAs have entrance examination that includes Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, while others have only mathematics.
