Brief description of the profession: –

With use of both creative as well aesthetic sense, a fashion designer basically needs to come up with new creative and innovative design ideas. There must be a good sense of colour, texture and expression of the idea in the sketch that a fashion designer has to come up with.

Also, there needs to be good sense of fabric and accessories, so that a design could be implemented.

 

Skills required for the field:

  • Creative and innovative: Coming up with something new and different that makes sense fashionably is the USB of fashion designer, and the most important skill.
  • Imagery and aesthetic sense: You need to have sense of hoe your design would look good and how it’ll be developed into an outfit.
  • Fabric knowledge: You need to have knowledge about various fabrics and types, so that your design ideas could be brought out in the most effective way.
  • Marketing: You need to be updated about market prices of various fabrics and clothing, so that you can buy and sell accordingly.
  • Trend alert: You need to have latest information about what’s latest fashion trend going on to bring out the outfits accordingly.

 

Job scope:

There are many opportunities in this industry and different ways a fashion designer can work as. One can also join an ongoing company, work as freelance or an independent fashion designer.

  • Garment and textile export house: One has to make new designs for apparels, accessories, footwear etc., according to the needs of market and clients.
  • Branded fashion showrooms: High fashion stores need fashion designers to create new outfits particularly for them. So, one can tie up with such brands.
  • Textile and fabric manufacturing units: Here fabrics are designed and manufactured according to the needs and demands of the clients.
  • Boutiques: Apparels are designed and showcased in boutiques, which can be either of a brand or independent.
  • Retail brands: There are many brand chains that make outfits according to the need of the customer.
  • Television and film industry: Celebrity fashion designers make and choose outfits for the actors and other celebrities according to the demand of role or the event.
  • Professor: One can teach fashion designing in one of the fashion training institutes.
  • Independent/ self-employed fashion designer: one can open their own fashion studio, and design & sell outfits.
  • Blogging/vlogging: As a fashion blogger (Write) and vlogger (video), you can share latest fashion trends and outfit ideas that can help viewers. As, you gain popularity, you can tie up with brands, as they want promotions too.

 

How well does the job pay?

 

The pay varies according to the level of the company and amount of the work you are getting. But, on an average one can bag up to 10-15k per month as a fresher.

Of course, it’ll increase as you experience and grow professionally. As an experienced professional one can earn up to 30-40k per month.

As you gain more of popularity and demand, this can be very promising field, as you’ll be setting your own price. Media connected field have comparatively more pay.

 

Job environment:

 

Usually one has to work on designs and prepare sketches in the fashion house. These days being tech-friendly is also important because many times designs are made on computers. Also, one needs to cooperate with clients and buyer, and supply designs and outfit according to their needs and demands. Other than this one needs to prepare and ready models to showcase their designs to the buyers.

There are many areas a fashion designer can work in, such as designer wear production, fashion business and marketing, planning and management, fashion media, brand promotions and more.

One can take up many roles like, designer, marketing head, fashion consultant, personal stylist, technical designer, graphic designer, fashion producer or fashion coordinator.

Other than this one can also work in showrooms and deal with buying and selling. Or, being an entrepreneur is also a huge opportunity, one you’ve gained some experience.

 

How do I get there?

  1. Complete 10+2 in any stream.
  2. Pursue B.Sc. Fashion Designing/ B. Des. Fashion Design for 3- 4 years.
  3. Pursue M.A. Des. In Fashion Design/ M. Des. in Fashion Design for 2 years, or Pursue PG-Diploma in Fashion Designing or Study Abroad and Pursue M.A. Des. in Fashion Design/ M. Des. in Fashion Design for 1-2 years (Optional)
