Brief description of the profession: –
With use of both verbal and management skills, the job of a teacher includes providing students knowledge about various subjects and areas and inspiring them to work better.
It’s a job of high responsibility as one can turn around a student’s life by their words and shape future generation through their work. One needs to have good knowledge base of a particular area that they want to teach and management skills to cope up with a whole class.
Skills required for the field:
- Verbal/ linguistic skills: One needs to have good command over language as the job requires a lot of interaction and explaining things as a part of teaching.
- Good communication skills/ Interpersonal skills: As communication is the key for sharing knowledge and classroom management requires a lot of interacting with student, this skill is a must.
- Management skills: Classroom management and dealing with students is a primary part of teaching job.
- Leadership skills: Being an inspirator and a role model one needs to be leader in order to guide students in the right direction.
- Good knowledge base: Teacher cannot afford to impart wrong knowledge or facts to their student, for which correct knowledge base is necessary.
- Empathetic: Kids are sensitive and need to be dealt with empathy, for which this is a necessary trait.
- Patience: One needs to understand kid’s perspective and make them understand theirs, for which they have to be calm and patient with them to repeat and explain things over and over.
- Moral ethics: Having job of such responsibility includes being morally right as their moral would be getting instilled in their students.
Job scope:
Teaching job includes basically working in school at various levels, be it pre-primary, primary, elementary, secondary or senior secondary. It depends on the educational qualification and experience of an individual, upon which their post and responsibility depend.
Basically, primary level teachers need a degree in teacher training and elementary, secondary and higher secondary needs specialization in a particular subject or area, that they want to teach.
One can also become an independent teacher and start their own institute or tuition centre if they have the required knowledge and skills.
How well does the job pay?
Pay of a teacher depends on the post, experience and the level at which the teacher is teaching. Also, the level and type of school affects the pay package of a teacher, pay of private and government school varies a lot. On an average the pay of fresher primary level can be around 15k to 22k per month, whereas in government school it’ll be around 20k – 30k as a start. It can increase according to the experience and post.
Job environment:
Typically, job of a teacher includes dealing with students, parents, colleagues and principal. A teacher spends most of the time in classroom but is also responsible for various other things apart from just teaching like, maintaining discipline, examination duties, excursion responsibilities, exam checking and assessments, motivation and more.
Working hours are school timings which are mostly between 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, which may include some additional timing if there is any event or upcoming.
How do I get there?
- Complete 10+2 in any stream (depends on what you want to teach).
- Pursue Graduation in any stream for 3 years.
- After Graduation pursue Education/Bachelors in Education (B.Ed) for 1-2 year
- Pursue Masters in Education (M.Ed) for 1-2 years or Ph.D in Education or job
OR
- Complete 10+2 in any stream.
- Pursue B.El.Ed for 4 years (elementary teaching).
- Pursue Masters in Education (M.Ed) for 1-2 years
- D in Education or job.
OR
- Complete 10+2 in any stream.
- Pursue District Institute of Educational and Training (DIET) for 2 years.
* At least 50% either in Bachelor’s Degree and / or in the Master’s Degree in Science / Social Science /Humanities, Bachelor’s in Engineering or technology with specialization in Science and Mathematics with 55% marks or any other qualification equivalent to it.
